Dear Friend(s),
Dr. Melvin Lederman, Commander, US Navy, was a practicing cardio-thoracic surgeon. In 1968, he enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam War. Remarkably for his age of 40, he volunteered for the Airborne Jump School at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, receiving his Parachute Badge. In Vietnam he was assigned to the hospital ship, the USS REPOSE. During his free time he accompanied the MedEvac helicopter crews to the front lines to provide immediate medical attention in extraordinary life-saving efforts.
In his own written words, "Someone had to do the job of taking care of these kids and it is obvious that I am it. So, by conscience, I have been doing the best I know how". Two days before his official discharge, Dr. Lederman, Cmdr USN, was killed during a medical evacuation when his helicopter was shot down by enemy fire on November 29,1969.
In recognition of his valor, he received 4 Purple Hearts, several Air Medals, and was recommended for the Silver Star. To the troops who served with him, he became a legendary hero, "Super Doc".
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the early 1970’s, honored the memory of Dr. Lederman by designating an area of the Esplanade with a boulder bearing the words, Lederman Field. In 2005, the area was renamed Lederman Park.
The Committee to honor Dr. Melvin Lederman, Commander, US Navy, is composed of family, friends and supporters who are dedicated to preserving his legacy with a monument to replace the boulder to properly recognize and embody the spirit of Dr. Lederman. Designed to evoke feelings of strength, reflection and shared mortality.
